We were not in a good place. Humanity spent the first half of the 21st century bemoaning environmental disasters, war, food and fuel shortages, racism, xenophobia, toxic nationalism, and crimes against humanity. Despite knowing the future ahead was dark little was accomplished to change that. Great progress was made in medicine, engineering, genetics, and computer science, but few outside of corporations and the elite saw any benefits.
Then the Cullers came. We had only minutes of warning. Unknown objects detected in the solar system. Then the attack. There were less than a dozen of their small ships – but the devastation was wide spread. Death. Panic. Secondary natural and man-made disasters. We knew we were not alone in the world. We were afraid.
Fear is a great motivator. It turned enemies into allies. It brought humanity together with the determination to defeat their enemy at any cost.
At. Any. Cost.
